Thomas’ Knoll

My quiet corner of the web

It seems to me that it is only reasonable to post a list of services I offer, their charges, and what you get with each service.

Advice

Charge: Free

Knowledge should be free, and since I believe that completely, any question you have I will answer to the best of my ability. I can help you choose what computer to buy given your price range and intended use, or I can help you find a free software app to perform a task you need. If you have a question, just ask.

Full Consultation

Charge: $25 per hour

Consultations are performed wherever you choose, and I will help you with your computer need for as long as you need.

Computer Diagnostic

Charge: $25

A diagnostic can trace down the root cause of a given issue to determine the best course of action to get your computer running its best. When performing a diagnostic, I will need to know any specific details you can give me on how it is behaving “differently” than normal, as any detail can change the direction I begin my search and bring me to a fix sooner.

Software Install

Charge: $25

    Includes:

  • Installation of user-specified software
  • Update newly installed software
  • Verify software is running as designed and create shortcuts where wanted

Hardware Install

Charge: $25

    Includes:

  • Installation of user-specified hardware
  • Install any associated software and updates
  • Verify hardware is operating as designed

Malware Removal

Charge: $50

    Includes:

  • Detection and removal of suspected malware
  • Installation of free anti-spyware software to decrease risk of re-infestation
  • Installation of Windows Updates
  • Defrag of system hard drive

If it is determined that the system cannot be cleaned, the user can opt for a Windows Reinstallation, and my time rolls over into the charge for that.

Windows Reinstallation

Charge: $100

  • Complete reformat of the system drive
  • Reinstallation of the version of Windows that came with the computer, or a retail version purchased separately
  • Installation of all Windows Updates
  • Installation of all user-supplied software (ie: Microsoft Office, Printer and Camera software, etc) & updates
  • Installation of free security software, if none is provided by the user
  • Installation of “system essentials” (includes: Acrobat Reader, Adobe Flash Player, OpenOffice – if Microsoft Office is not installed, & CDBurnerXP)
  • Defrag of system hard drive

Hard Drive Wiped

Charge: $50

A hard drive wipe means wiping the hard drive using Department of Defense developed methods to ensure that nobody will ever be able to retrieve the data that was previously on the hard drive. This means wiping the hard drive using the DoD 5220.22 M method which includes wiping the hard drive 7 times. If you used your computer for personal finance and saved passwords to your bank or other accounts, I would recommend this if you are preparing the computer to give or sell to someone. This would be an added step prior to the Windows Reinstallation in that case.
